She only discovered she was called Constance (registered in her birth cert) at age 18, when she applied for entry into Newcastle to study law. Her mum called her Clear, as though she was transparent, her sisters called her Clare.
When I read the book I hated the mother. How could a mother do such things to her own daughter whom she carried in her stomach for 9 mths??? When her mother remarried, the stepfather molested her and her mother took his side and abused her. Luckily she knew how to stand up to him and went to the police and got an order from court for him to stay away from her. When she tried to seek her father's help, her mum threatened to bring him to court (cox the mum already had custody of the children when they divorced). I mean, since you hated her, you think she's a burden, then why not just let the father take care of her?
And when they shifted to a new house, they left her alone in the house to fend for herself. Not only that, the mother even charged her for the electricity bills, the rent for staying there and even took away the bed! She had to work 2 jobs while studying to pay her own mother!! Ridiculous.
I can't say enough of how atrocious her mother is. But after reading the book, I do realised that most of us were born lucky. So lucky, in fact that we don't treasure what we have and consistently persist in looking for something better. Actually what we have could already be the best, just that we turned a blind eye to it cox there are more temptations out there and makes you think the grass is greener on the other side.
Before I end off, since this blog is all about recommendation, I'm going to recommend this Jap restaurant on the 5th storey of Far East, #05-70 Wasabi Teh. Ate there this evening with 2 of my guy friends. Think if they had not told me about it, I totally would have no idea that such a restaurant existed thou I've been to Far East for like a MILLION times!!!
Anyway, reason why I recommend is mainly cox of it's low price HUGE servings. Plus the food is very fresh. Their sashimi is thumbs up! Wasabi also of good quality. Those who love jap cuisine can have a try there. One advice though - go in pairs if possible. The shop space is very small and limited seats are available. And most of the customers go in pairs, so it's easier to get seats for 2 then for 3 onwards.
